After Saturdays very bad performance, it was about the first time I'd ever gone to a game thinking damage limitation from the start. I couldn't see anyway that we could win and was just hoping that we wouldn't be humiliated.
That feeling changed as the game started as you instantly sensed we were a different team from Saturday. We were up for this.We were magnificent, given the team we had, probably one of the greatest performances ever.
At 0-0, with a few minutes left, I was very proud of the team and just hoping Milan didn't nick a undeserved winner - Bowyer's goal had me dancing round, hugging strangers, and has kept me in a good mood all week.
Duberry and Mills were a revelation - and Matteo had a great debut. Bakke was amazing considering his lack of match fitness and I thought Bridges was MoM and looked right back on form.
I was just saying to the bloke next to me that everything we do has to be almost perfect as we never seem to get any luck at all, when wallop LeeBowya, LeeBowya, LeeBowya, had a 25 yard shot. We held our breath as the keeper appeared to have it safely covered. Everything changed into slow motion as the keeper, quarter saved, quarter blocked, quarter lost control, quarter dropped, fully cocked it all up. From where we were sitting we saw it all so vividly as the ball dropped against the net at the left of the keeper's legs.
The ground erupted as if someone had set off a massive firework. What a night, even the The Morgue were singing (Family Stand). The conditions had been atrocious all evening. It poured down for the entire game, at the end it was becoming a bit water splashy. O'Leary was beginning to be under pressure, lighting candles indeed. He will be calling up Glen Hoddle's bird soon.
Anyway to finish on a high, no individual scores for this game, they all played ran, worked, covered, helped each other, so I will give them 10 out of 10 for a wonderful team effort and all round performance. As we travel to Derby on Saturday we can reflect and chat to our mates about the greatest Champions League performance so far. You armchair wallers (all experts) want to get out and see a real game, with real fans. You don't know what yer missing!
