The following e-mail was sent to 'Leeds United World' yesterday (15/04/00). It would be amusing if it wasn't so tragic - and indicates to what extent some of the Galatasaray fans are willing to go in order to take the moral high ground over last week's events.
I am writing to say that i was also in Istanbul a week or so ago with my
wife and as an Englishman i would love to say that theLeeds supporters
were on best behaviour.Unfortunately i cant. I was discusted to see at
least 20 so called supporters urinating against a national statue and
burning a Turkish flag. Also i witnessed two english men touching the
backsides of two turkish girls which in fact started a big fight. I
understand how terrible it is for the family of those who lost there
lives but i must emphasize that Turkey is not a european country and we
must abide by there customs when we go . I do not believe that
Galatasary fans would cause trouble but that the only reason they will
not be allowed to travel is to stop the hooligans attacking them and
thus aid england not getting the world cup in 2006, It is so political.
and why did the english press not show how badly behaved the english
fans were, Brainwashing at its extreme. I hope the match passes safely
and we should not think of it as The Turkish peoples fault. It is surely
the fault of the Leeds "trouble makers" whi i saw degrading the customs
of Turkey. I wish i could have calmed them down at the time but when
english football supporters get too drunk they are unstoppable as my
wife and i noticed ..Have a safe match and lets hope the leeds fans
behave themselves..
