This was probably the worst perormances from a Leeds United team that I have ever seen. They were poor against Coventry and bad against Man City but today they sank to a new level. Against Barcelona we expected a thrashing and got it, but Ipswich, oh my God!
Basic things like passing, keeping your eye on the ball, finding men from throw-ins and keeping on-side was impossible for them today. Even judging where the ball was going to land from Martyn's clearances was difficult and was cocked up...unbelievable!
We started like a house on fire, attacking, which led to a super passing sweeping move that brought the opening goal from Lee Bowyer after on three minutes of play. We thought this was it. That was it, after that we were second rate never mind second best. Dacourt was guilty of overhitting passes by miles. Kelly was abysmal, Harte was as bad, Duberry was Duberry. He must learn to head the ball with his forehead. Perhaps then it wouldn't fly off in any direction.
On one occasion Duberry and one of their players went for the ball near the touch line in our half, their player fell over, Doobs was left on his feet with the ball in front of him. He could have either side footed it into touch or tried to find one of his team mates. The ball was about a foot from the touch line. He did neither. He cracked the ball into touch which if any poor supporter had been behind it they would hve been put into orbit. How could O'Leary sell Alfie and keep Doobs?
Mills was weak as you no what. Head down running about he reminds me of how my wife plays. Nuff said. McPhail was...am I allowed to use four letter words that begin with "C" and end with "P"? Lee Bowyer wasn't bad at times but the rest of the time he has the astonishing ability to make himself invisible for long spells of the game. Smithy was Smithy from last season: ineffective. Bridges was a mere shadow of the player he can be and that means rubbish.
And finally Huckerby, well to be honest he was the best forward on our team. It would be fair to say that he was the only one who could run with the ball, maybe down blind alleys most of the time but the boy did look as if he was trying.
When they went off for their half time to do whatever they do at half time I said to my twelve year old son, "Well at least it can't get any worse". I was wrong. It did get worse a lot worse. They were booed at the end, they were that bad.
In my last match report I criticised O'Leary for his naievity in changing the team around and trying to get the best out of the fourteen players who are on the sheet. I think today we didn't have any substitutes, because it didn't take a football superbrain to know that something needed changing. He did nothing, the eleven players who started the game finished the game. Unbelievable.
Ipswich are just a mediocre side who will be struggling to stay in the Prem. My final observation, They had a number 19, Titus Bramble, central defender. He was as slow as a pensioner, about six foot odd, an inside leg of about twenty nine inches and he came through our defence beating players on at least three occasions. If he had been able to keep going he probably would have scored. That summed it up for me.
Marks
Nige 5 No chance with goals, one good save. Distribution again leaves a lot to be desired. Too much punting the ball to their defenders instead of throwing it to our players.
Kells 3 Terrible, disastrous. Worst ever game surely in his life.
Doobs 4 Even against this opposition he wasn't up to it.
Mills 4 Not a central defender. Hay is. Why on the bench?
Harte 5 Actually provided the only width we had at times, but still mediocre.
Bowyer 6 Only outfield player who looked interested for some of the game.
Dacourt 1st half 6 2nd half 2. Had his passing gene surgically removed at h/t.
McFrail 2 Why? Why? Jones and Burns on the bench too....
Smith 3 Went back in a time-warp to last season. Looked Nationwide.
Bridges 3 Fancy flicks to lose the ball with 10 minutes left, 2-1 down.
Huckerby 5 Actually not too bad. If anyone had ever passed to him.
Subs
Superglued to the bench. Must've been fuming. (Robbo, Jones, Burns, Hay, Hackworth)
Ref
Halsey 4 Shite, not that it mattered.
Crowd 5
Fair play to the North East who had to teach the Kop how to get behind the team. Lots of booing during and after.
