Nigel Martyn

 Nigel Martyn

Position: Goalkeeper

Born: St. Austell

Date of Birth: 11.8.66

Signed: July 1996

From: Crystal Palace

Fee: £2,250,000

One of our most influential players since signing for us in the Summer of 1996. Nigel's near faultless displays saved us from probable relegation during his first season with us and then helped us to qualify for Europe in consecutive campaigns. Never quite managed to oust Seaman for the England number one jersey and failed to feature in the 2002 World Cup Finals. Then, following O'Leary's sacking, was given little opportunity by Venables and failed to feature last season. As I write, it looks as though a move away from Elland Road might be on the cards. Nigel would be sadly missed.

Paul Robinson

Paul Robinson

Position: Goalkeeper

Born: Beverley

Date of Birth: 15.10.79

Signed: May 1997

From: Schoolboy

Fee: None

Robinson's main problem for several seasons was that he had England's top keeper ahead of him at club level! Made a massive impact during the 2000-2001 season, especially during our Champions League run, when Martyn suffered a rare injury. However, still failed to break into the team on a regular basis until Venables arrival. A regular last season he blotted his copy book a little over the Summer when almost joining Aston Villa after allegedly 'holding out' for a move to his boyhood heroes, the team on the other side of the Pennines.

Danny Milosevic

Danny Milosevic

Position: Goalkeeper

Born: Carlton, Australia

Date of Birth: 26.6.78

Signed: January 2000

From: Perth Glory

Fee: £100,000

Signed from Australian club Perth Glory for £100,000 in January 2000, Danny has yet to break through into the first team picture, having two such high quality performers ahead of him in the goalkeeping ranks. However, should Martyn leave in the near future (as seems increasinly likely), Milosevic will be in the thick of things for 2003-2004.

Seen as the eventual replacement to Mark Bosnich in the Australian national side, he has had to be patience personified over the last three seasons, spending time on loan with Plymouth and Crewe.

Lucas Radebe

Lucas Radebe

Position: Centre Back

Born: Johannesburg

Date of Birth: 12.4.69

Signed: September 1994

From: Kaiser Chiefs

Fee: £250,000

A Wilkinson buy, who originally struggled to be a first team regular but since then has developed into one of the Premiership's most cultured central defenders, a highly respected former club captain - and known simply as "The Chief" by United supporters. Has a wonderful habit of making the art of defending appear deceptively easy and was a major miss throughout 2001-2, when injury threatened to end his career. Made an unexpected and successful return to action in the 2002 World Cup Finals with South Africa and played a pert in last season's relegation battle. With Rio and Woody now distant memories, Lucas should have a significant role to play in Peter Reid's first full season in charge.

Dominic Matteo

 Dominic Matteo

Position: Defence

Born: Dumfries

Date of Birth: 24.4.74

Signed: August 2000

From: Liverpool

Fee: £4,250,000

Dom has gone from strength to strength since arriving at Elland Road, to such an extent that he was named Captain by Terry Venables. Regarded as something of a utility player during his time at Liverpool, most Leeds supporters expected him initially to put pressure on Harte for the left back slot. However, following an injury crisis during 2000-2001, he made the centre back position his own, turning in excellent performances - especially during our Champions League run, where he formed a solid partnership with Ferdinand. Blighted somewhat by injury in 2002-2003, he will be hoping for better fortune this time round - where his experience is much needed in what has been, on occasions recently, a shaky looking back four.

Michael Duberry

 Michael Duberry

Position: Centre Back

Born: Enfield

Date of Birth: 14.10.75

Signed: June 1999

From: Chelsea

Fee: £4,500,000

Signed during the summer of 1999 to reinforce an already formidable Leeds rearguard, Duberry arrived at the club hoping to resurrect his international career. However, his first season at Elland Road was a major disappointment, seeing him slip down the defensive pecking order and he has never really recovered. Despite being tall and powerfully built, seems to lack pace and tactical awareness at times and came unstuck big time when the chips were down. His cause was not helped by his involvement with the Bowyer/ Woodgate court case and constant injury problems. Typically unluckily, with departures and a new manager giving him a fresh start for 2003, managed to pick up a cheekbone injury in the close season friendly with Villa and so is likely to miss the first two months of the campaign.

Zoumana Camara

Zoumana Camara

Position: Centre Back

Born: Colombes, France

Date of Birth: 4.3.79

Signed: July 2003

From: Lens

Fee: Loan

Joined in the summer from French First Division side RC Lens. With a single international cap for France, he can list clubs such as St Etienne, Inter Milan, Bastia and Olympique Marseille on his CV - and so would appear to be no mug, especially as he has allegedly been likened to O'Leary's one time target, Chelsea's William Gallas.

Not the big money Summer signing to which we have grown accustomed over recent seasons - but certainly one which offers hope for the future. He's a big lad!

Gary Kelly

Gary Kelly

Position: Right Back

Born: Drogheda

Date of Birth: 9.7.74

Signed: September 1991

From: Home Farm

Fee: none

A superb servant to the club who has never let us down. Howard Wilkinson transformed him from a forward who couldn't score goals to a quality right back, both for us and the Republic of Ireland. Despite being named in the PFA Premiership team a couple of years ago, has been forced to play second fiddled to Danny Mills over recent seasons. Not quite as quick as he was when he first broke into the team (understandably!), his strength now lies in the fact that he is very much a "utility" man: turning up in either full back position or most recently on the right side of midfield.

Ian Harte

Ian Harte

Position: Left Back

Born: Drogheda

Date of Birth: 31.8.77

Signed: December 1995

From: Trainee

Fee: none

After an uncertain start to his United career, Hartey began to blossom in the 1998-99 season and along with his Uncle Gary, was named in the PFA Premiership side of 2000. Since then, though, has been 'found out' a little by top class forwards who were able to easily exploit his lack of pace. A major bonus, though, was his prowess as a dead ball specialist, where he has chipped in with almost double figures in past seasons. Suffered from something of a crisis of confidence over 2002-2003 with some stuttering defensive performances and a lack of half decent dead ball deliveries. However, vital goals in the last two Premiership fixtures of last campaign and a belter in pre-season 2003 give hope that a return to form might be just round the corner.

Danny Mills

Danny Mills

Position: Right Back

Born: Norwich

Date of Birth: 18.5.77

Signed: June 1999

From: Charlton Athletic

Fee: £4,100,000

Mills was O'Leary's first major capture in 1999, seeing his valuation rise sharply after being named in Keegan's first England squad of the summer. However, like fellow newcomer, Duberry, he failed to live up to his billing during his first season with us. Since then, though, has improved dramatically, ousting Kelly as first choice right back and, following an injury to Gary Neville, starring for England in the 2002 World Cup Finals. Like many of his teammates, let himself down a little in 2002-2003 - but will be hoping for better things this time round and to cling onto his England squad place.

Frazer Richardson

Frazer Richardson

Position: Right Back

Born: Rotherham

Date of Birth: 29.10.82

Signed: n/a

From: Trainee

Fee: None

Born in Rotherham and a lifelong Leeds fan, Frazer came through thr Academy ranks and is regarded as the long term sucessor to Kelly and Mills in the right back position.

Signed a four-year contract in the summer of 2002 and played more of a part in first team affairs last time round. However, yet to make his full first team debut: a situation he will be hoping to remedy over the next nine months..

Matthew Kilgallon

Matthew Kilgallon

Position: Centre Back

Born: York

Date of Birth: 8.1.84

Signed: n/a

From: Trainee

Fee: None

Another talented young central defender and Woody lookalike who will be hoping to push hard for a first team place over the forthcoming campaign..

Made his United debut in last season's Uefa Cup match against Hapoel Tel Aviv, coming on for the Chief to play his part in a 4-1 win away from home. His Premiership debut also came as a substitute against West Ham at Elland Road in February 2003.

Didier Domi

Didier Domi

Position: Defender

Born: Sarcelles

Date of Birth: 2.5.1978

Signed: August 2003

From: Paris Saint Germain

Fee: Loan

Signed on a one year's loan deal from PSG in August 2003 but we have an option to make the deal permanent for £2m if he does the business during his time at Elland Road. For once, we look to have got ourselves a good deal...but watch this space ;)

Domi spent two seasons at Newcastle, where he looked a class act at times although occasionally flattered to deceive. Eventually, had a row with Sir Bobby and left the club of his own accord. No doubt he will be looking forward to a reunion on the first Sunday of the new campaign!

Considering our current plight, Didier looks an excellent acquisition, having tasted success in France by winning the French league and cup with PSG and also playing in the Cup Winners' Cup final against Barcelona.

Jody Morris

Jody Morris

Position: Midfield

Born: Fulham

Date of Birth: 22.12.78

Signed: July 2003

From: Chelsea

Fee: Free

Hardly the most popular of opposition players to visit Elland Road when in a Chelsea shirt, Morris is, however, just the sort of lad who has done well with us in the past: a battling bone crunching midfield dynamo who isn't concerned with winning popularity contests. His first contribution in a Leeds shirt was to instigate a 22 man brawl in a pre-season friendly, which bodes well for the coming season. We will also hope that his off the field antics have been calmed a little - and be thankful that pals Woodgate, Bowyer and Ferdinand amongst others have moved to patures new.

David Batty

David Batty

Position: Midfield

Born: Beeston, Leeds

Date of Birth: 2.12.68

Signed: December 1998

From: Newcastle United

Fee: £4,400,000

An Elland Road legend who, unfortunately, was allowed to leave the club six years ago, robbing us of some of his best years. Cynics branded his 1998 return as sentimentality over reason, especially given the fact that Midfield is not one of our weaker areas, but were soon silenced by his superb form at the end of 1998-99 and the start of the following campaign campaign. Suffered a near career ending injury but returned in 2001 to establish himself once again, only for Venables to completely snub him over 2002-2003, much to the anger of United supporters. Great to see him back in action during the 2003 pre-season games - and it looks as though he will have a significant role to play under Reid over the forthcoming campaign.

Nick Barmby

Nick Barmby

Position: Midfield

Born: Hull

Date of Birth: 11.2.1974

Signed: August 2002

From: Liverpool

Fee: £2,750,000

As former manager Terry Venables first signing as Leeds United manager, joining the club for £2.75m from Liverpool in August 2002, Nick unfortunately has more pressure on him than most in trying to win over the United supporters.

He enjoyed five years at Spurs, before moving to Middlesbrough for £5.25m where he remained for just over a season before Everton bought him him £5.75m. He played a major role at Goodison Park for the four years he spent with them, then unexpectedly moved to Liverpool for £6m - much Everton supporters' anger and disbelief..

His first season with us was marred somewhat by indifferent form and injury problems, his association with Mr Venables sad few months in charge and the fact that most supporters would have preferred to see Harry terrorising right backs than Nick. However, now fully fit and with a new manager in charge, he will be hoping to become a first team regular over 2003-2004.

Seth Johnson

Seth Johnson

Position: Midfield

Born: Birmingham

Date of Birth: 12.3.79

Signed: October 2001

From: Derby County

Fee: £7,000,000

Seth may go on to be one of the greatest Leeds players ever to wear a Leeds shirt. However, at this present moment in time, he looks to be one of O'Leary's worst bits of business. Not that he's a particularly bad player but just rather overpriced, especially considering that his price could rise to £9m depending upon appearances. Started reasonably enough and was clearly seen as a long term replacement for Batty. Unfortunately, though, just as he was at Derby, has been plagued with injuries over the best part of two seasons - and will have much to prove this time around, especially as revelations that he was on £37k a week make him a candidate for our worst signing of all time!

Steven McPhail

Stephen McPhail

Position: Midfield

Born: London

Date of Birth: 9.12.79

Signed: n/a

From: Trainee

Fee: none

At Youth level, Stephen was regarded by many as the most skillful of United's bright new players -and, after an uncertain start, when most agreed he wasn't physically strong enough for the Premiership, started to live up to his potential. However, drifted out of O'Leary's first team thinking, was loaned out to Milwall and has never really made the grade. Venables and now Reid both look to have some faith in him - but supporters won't be holding their breaths over the forthcoming season.

Eirik Bakke

Eirik Bakke

Position: Midfield

Born: Norway

Date of Birth: 13.9.77

Signed: May 1999

From: Sogndal

Fee: £1,750,000

Bakke already had Norway U21 and full caps to his name, when he joined us in May 1999 but was described by O'Leary as "one for the future." A pleasant surprise then that he went on to play such a major part in that season's success. Like so many of his teammates at the time, Eirik seemed comfortable on the ball and with no little skill. Since then, though, has disappointed somewhat and tends to drift in and out of games. Clearly one of O'Leary's favourites, Venables also had faith in him and he will be hoping for the same support from Peter Reid.

Jason Wilcox

Jason Wilcox

Position: Midfield/ Forward

Born: Bolton

Signed: December 1999

From: Blackburn Rovers

Fee: £3,000,000

There were a few raised eyebrows when O'Leary paid £3 million for the out of favour Blackburn winger. Despite bursting onto the scene during Blackburn's 'glory' years, Wilcox's place had been taken at Ewood Park by rising star Duff. So could he still hack it in the Premiership? The answer was a resounding "Yes!" Solid, if unspectacular displays during his first season with us, allowed Harry freedom to play up front and score some important goals. Has faded from the scene a little since then but is still a useful squad member.

Jamie McMaster

Jamie McMaster

Position: Forward

Born: Sydney, Australia

Date of Birth: 29.11.1982

Signed: n/a

From: NSW Academy

Fee: None

Another young Australian signed up from the NSW Academy, Jamie eventually made his first team debut last season, eventually making four starts under ex-boss Terry Venables. He will be looking to build on that this season with Peter Reid now in charge and start to fulfill that early potential, which saw Australia, Scotland and England all fighting for his international signature. 2003-2004 could be a massive season for him!

Mark Viduka

Mark Viduka

Position: Forward

Born: Melbourne, Australia

Date of Birth: 9.10.1975

Signed: July 2000

From: Celtic

Fee: £6,000,000

The close season saw Viduka's agent touting him round allegedly 'bigger' clubs, the player himself looking completely disinterested in pre-season friendlies but unwilling to put in an official transfer request in case he was to lose a £1m loyalty (now there's a laugh!) bonus. All this has uncomfortable echoes of the reputation he came to us with: a temperamental Aussie who might desert us at the slightest whim and by the time you read this, he might very well be gone. Supporters' opinions have always been divided as to whether Mark was the man to lead our line - accusing him of lack of effort at times and looking occasionally out of condition - but in his three seasons with us he has banged in some memorable goals and been our top scorer in each campaign. In 2002-2003, his end of season scoring spree single handedly saved us from relegation.

Alan Smith

Alan Smith

Position: Forward

Born: Rothwell, Leeds

Date of Birth: 28.10.80

Signed: n/a

From: Trainee

Fee: none

Our depleted resources at present does at least have one saving grace: that Smithy will get to play in his strongest position - up front - rather than out wide right or wherever else he has had to fill in over the last couple of seasons. Smithy has become something of a talisman figure for us since his remarkable breakthrough to the first team. Many of us dream of scoring at Anfield with our first touch of the game - but for Alan Smith this became reality - on his debut in the 1998-99 season. Failed to live up to the lofty expectations that were placed on his inexperienced shoulders during the following campaign but came roaring back in 2002 and has become a fixture in the team since. Wears his 'heart on his sleeve' and must improve his temperament if he is to succeed at the highest level. Otherwise, though, an absolute gem and most definitely the last player supporters would want to leave the club. If Smithy goes, then we know things are beyond repair.
