An unchanged line up took the field against Tottenham Hotspur: Martyn, Kelly, Mills, Radebe, Harte, Matteo, Dacourt, Bakke, Bowyer, Smith, Viduka - on a gloriuous afternoon perfect for football. A 37,000 plus crowd welcomed out the two teams.
The visitors, in a snazzy navy strip, were soon under pressure as Leeds made a good attacking start. Unfortunately due to stoppages through injuries it was a bit of a stop start affair and went very flat with neither side able to get going.
A clash between Radebe and Ferdinand resulted in both players lying motionless on the turf. Ferdinand was stretchered off taking no further part and Radebe cotinued after a lengthy spell of treatment. Later in the half Dacort limped off and then Radebe sustained another terrible knock which resulted in him being taken to the dressing room just before half time: McPhail and Hay the substitutes.
A good move between the lively Iverson and Leonardson resulted in a nasty shock when Spurs took the lead with a splendid goal from Rebrov. Anderton had come on for Ferdinand and was attempting to stamp some authority on the game. A poor first half ended with the dreaded injury jinx taking two of ourmost experienced players. Half time Leeds 0, Spurs 1.
Goodness only knows what Dol said at half time but it was a different Leeds United that came out firing on all cylinders directly from the restart. After only three minutes we were level and a further ten minutes we were 2-1 in front. In a spectacular 20 minutes we saw 5 goals. Almost every attack looked as though a goal could come. Exciting stuff but not for the managers I should think.
Graham came in for some anti chants whilst the king of Elland Road enjoyed the usual O'Leary, O'Leary, O'Leary whenever he made a touchline appearance.
Spurs eventually made it 4-3 and we were glad to hear the final whistle to be honest. An excellent second half that we just deserved to win. The substitutes McPhail and Hay were both super. As was Bridges who came on late on for the two goalscoring Viduka. Bridges was unlucky not to score with almost his first touch of the ball. Another great performance from Smith who ended up with two well taken and much deserved goals. With a little luck both Viduka and Smith could have had hat-tricks. The referee was good except for a decision he took from the linesman when it was clear the ball had not gone for a cornerbut one was given. The following corner kick resulted in Tottenham's third goal.
Players scores: a good second half display but a poor firsthalf. 5.5 each for the first half and 8 in the second as it was a good team display. It is heartening to know that the squad, though not all fit, we could field fourteen good quality players as we did today, every one of them worth their salt. When we have Kewell, Batty, Woodgate and Wilcox back, it will be a manager's dream to be able to select from this super squad.Lets hope todays injuries to Lucas and Olivier are only minor knocks although Lucas appeared to be in a bit of a state as we was lead off after a lengthysecond spell of touchline treatment. Dacourt's pulled hamstring should be OK. Thank goodness the medicals have two weeks to get the lads ready for the next encounter.
After the game the customary hand-shake between the two managers was quite farcical as the snake Graham offered his hand and turned and looked the otherway. It didn't take a genius to see that DOL was very annoyed at the incident. You would have thought that as these two spent a lot of time together a word or two from the Snake would have been appropriate. Like the Spurs fans chanted, "You can stick George Graham up your arse...............SIDEWAYS!"
