Leeds United 2-1 Leicester City

Premiership

Elland Road: 3.00pm

Following an extremely impressive display against bogey team supreme, Leicester City, we have now managed five Premiership wins on the bounce, seven consecutive victories at Elland Road and twelve in all competitions. Not bad eh? What's more, we sit proudly on top of the Premiership table, two points ahead of Manchester United - albeit having played one game more.

It was obvious from the word go, this afternoon, that the lads were well and truly up for it. Not only was our passing crisp and movement intelligent but we managed to outbattle Leicester - not bad considering the away team have more the build or a Rugby League team than a footballing outfit!

After dominating the early exchanges, we could have taken the lead as early as the seventh minute, when Kewell hit the bar with a long range effort. Then, from the rebound, Bridges couldn't keep the ball down.

Leicester had barely been out of their own half when, on 10 minutes, disaster struck. Kelly played Martyn into trouble with a back pass, then when Nigel repaid the compliment, Gary decided to try to play his way out of trouble. Eventually his attempted clearance was cut out by Oakes on the edge of the area, who crossed for Tony Cottee to head home his ninth goal of the campaign. Talk about daylight robbery! Surely Leicester couldn't do it to us again, could they?

Thankfully, no-one dropped their heads and we kept the attacking rhythm intact which had been serving us so well. On 20 minutes, McPhail found Bridges who played a through ball up to Huckerby. Unfortunately, though, Darren's first touch just let him down a little and the chance went begging.

However, we didn't have to wait long for an equalizer. On 29 minutes, another burst of pace down the left from Kewell and a sweetly hit shot by Bridges - his thirteen of the season so far - put us level. It was no more than we deserved. Now we really went for the jugular with Leicester pegged back in their own half.

On the stroke of half time, Bridges cut inside Savage on the left finding Bowyer, on the edge of the box, with a low crisp pass. The latter held off the attentions of Gilchrist before striking a sweetly hit shot into the top left hand corner of the visitor's goal. A contender for Leeds' Goal of the Season?

Still, though, the first half action wasn't over. With the seconds ticking away, Bowyer hit a superb volley towards goal which was palmed away by the in form Arphexad. Then Bakke couldn't beat him from the rebound.

We were applauded off for a superb first half performance, yet the best was still to come. It would be difficult to list all of our attempts on goal, in a pulsating second half, but needless to say we could - and perhaps should - have scored half a dozen. Leicester were forced to defend for almost the entirety of the remaining forty five minutes.

Five minutes into the half, Huckerby finished off a sweet Leeds move by neatly slotting the ball past the Leicester keeper, only to see the effort ruled out for offside. Then three minutes later, he found himself in space just outside the area but couldn't find enough pace in his shot. We were to have numerous such efforts throughout the half.

Just before the hour mark, we forced another corner, from which Huckerby found Harte's head. However, Arphexad was again on hand to make the save. Then, two minutes later, he saved again, as a lightning burst from Kewell released Bridges on the left of the Leicester box.

On 70 minutes came one of the most memorable moments of the afternoon. Harte put over a superb cross into the box, which found the head of Kewell - who was on fire, even compared to his usual high standards. Yet again, the keeper saved. He was keeping his team in the match almost single handedly.

Three minutes later, a superb Ian Harte free kick was palmed away. Then, with the injured Huckerby replaced by new signing Wilcox, the newcomer was involved in a beautiful series of one twos with McPhail, before releasing Bridges in the box. Unfortunately, though, Michael couldn't find Leeds' third goal, which our performance very much merited.

Of course, at 2-1, there was always the slight worry that Heskey might grab something on the very rare Leicester counter attacks, especially considering what the have done to us in past games. However, overall, this was as comprehensive a 2-1 victory as you are ever likely to witness. O'Leary's team was given a standing ovation at the end - as we kept our place at the top of the table for another game, at least.

United Star Man: Harry Kewell (A truly breathtaking performance!)
